		TRILBY'S NOTES

My name is Trilby.

Four years ago I was involved in the DeFoe Manor Incident. I and four other individuals were trapped inside a manor house by some kind of supernatural intelligence; a dark wraith with murder on its mind, the ghost of the original owner's youngest son.

I was inside DeFoe Manor for five days. I was forced to do something I can never forgive myself for. Possessed I may have been, but I was still watching through my eyes a man dying at my hands...

Three of us got out alive. Me, the Taylor woman, and the boy. The place burnt to the ground as we escaped, but ever since then I have been haunted by the possibility that John DeFoe was not at rest, that the idol that contained his soul would have survived the blaze, and still be out there somewhere...

July, 1997. My darkest fears have been confirmed. Another innocent lies dead. The idol did survive the fire. The only good news is that I know where it is. I have come to this hotel on this isolated Welsh island to find the soul of John DeFoe and see it destroyed, utterly and completely. Only then can I rest easy.

But I can't shake the feeling that there is more to this than the ghost of one retarded youth. Was it really pure will alone that brought such a weak, mindless creature back as such a dangerous wraith? It doesn't seem likely at all...

I wonder what lies below the surface...

INSTALLATION

Unzip the contents of notes.zip into a new folder, eg C:\NOTES. Double-click winsetup.exe to configure your resolution and sound card, then double-click notes.exe to begin.

CONTROLS

Trilby's Notes plays very similarly to the old SCI0 games like Leisure Suit Larry 2 or Space Quest 3. When the question mark symbol is visible, you are free to control your character.

- Use the cursor keys to move. Tap once to start moving, tap again to stop. You will need to be close to an object to physically interact with it.

- When you wish to interact with your surroundings, start typing a command and the text box will appear. Trilby's Notes uses a text parser just like in interactive fiction games. Use simple commands like LOOK AROUND or OPEN DOOR.

- Press TAB or type 'inv' to open and close your inventory.

- When talking to characters, you must specify a topic of conversation by entering a command such as ASK <CHARACTER> ABOUT <SUBJECT>. Often ASK <CHARACTER> ABOUT HIMSELF is a good way to start.

- Press ESC to open the menu. From here you can save, load or quit.

KNOWN BUGS

On some computers the Windows WAV sound volume may be automatically turned down when the game is started, making sounds but not music inaudible (you will notice because the movement of the cursor on the title screen is supposed to make boop boop noises). To rectify this, alt-tab out of the game and manually change the Windows volume control to a comfortable level.

There has been a bug reported that causes the game to lock up during the final sequence if the player starts typing at exactly the right moment. This bug may have been fixed, but it's hard to tell because we can't seem to replicate it.

If you encounter any bugs, or just want to tell me what you think of the game, send mail to yahtzee@fullyramblomatic.com
